Five-Year Shelf Life for all Pines Products

Why do Pines' products show a five-year shelf life while greens in plastic bottles show a 3-year shelf life. The difference is we use glass bottles with special metal caps that allow us to remove the oxygen from each bottle in a similar manner used for food storage containers that have a 10 year shelf life. Actually, without oxygen, a product could stay fresh indefinitely! After five years, a green superfood from Pines is still vibrant green while one in a cheap plastic tub has turned brown or a dull grey color.

We all need oxygen. Highly pigmented vegetables Pines Wheat Grass, Pines Barley Grasss, Green Duo, Alfalfa and Mighty Greens help the body use oxygen.  That's because they increase Nitric Oxide levels for greater stamina, endurance and recovery.  Oxygen in bottles is a different matter.

Even after Five Years Our Greens are Vibrant

Oxygen is essential for life, but when oxygen is in contact with wheatgrass powder and other highly-pigmented superfoods before purchase, nutrients slowly devitalize through the process known as oxidation. Thus, even though you need oxygen to live, oxygen for long periods in containers is not good. Plastic containers and paper packets offer very little protection for highly pigmented superfoods.  The oxygen causes vegetable powders in plastic containers and paper packets to lose nutrition and vibrant color.

The effect of oxidation on sensitive green food nutrients was a great concern to Dr. Charles Schnabel. Steve Meyerowitz, author of "Wheatgrass: Nature’s Finest Medicine." called Schnabel "the father of wheatgrass." Starting in 1937, Schnabel organized medical research using whole food wheatgrass powder. His research served as the scientific basis for the books by Ann Wigmore and other authors. Schnabel used the same oxygen-free packaging used by Pines for the last 40 years. The tight-fitting metal caps result in a tightly sealed bottle between uses. This helps keep the product fresh after opening.

A Five-Year Shelf Life Increases Vegetable Nutrition

Grown and harvested as we do, Pines Wheat Grass is a nutrient-dense leafy-green vegetable. As a result of the CDC studies, the USDA developed MyPlate to show that green vegetables should be our most important food.

Pines Wheat Grass is a convenient and economical way to increase your green nutrition. A rounded teaspoon of powder in a smoothie or seven tablets contain the nutrition of a full serving of a veggies such as kale or spinach. Because of our growing, harvesting and packaging standards, no other wheatgrass product is as nutrient dense as Pines. Because it is a whole food, not a juice, Pines Wheat Grass is prebiotic and thus promotes probiotic bacteria to ensure colon health and full assimilation of nutrients.

Earth-Friendly Packaging Results in Greener Veggies

Pines is the only company that packages wheatgrass in earth-friendly amber glass bottles. We use special metal caps. That allows us to remove the oxygen. This safeguard prevents loss of color and nutrition through oxidation that occurs with plastic bottles. Further, petroleum-based plastic bottles contain toxic chemicals. Unfortunately, it not possible for stores to avoid products packaged in plastic.

Certified Organic & Non-GMO Project Verified

For more than 40 years, Pines' has demonstrated a sincere commitment for sustainable organic agriculture. Pines is the only 100% organic grower of whole food wheatgrass powder and tablets.  That's because Pines does not practice "dual farming." Other growers harvest organic wheatgrass, barley grass and alfalfa for a few weeks each spring.  Then, they return to pesticide-based agriculture for the rest of the year. That's not the case with Pines. Everything we grow is certified organic, gluten free, Kosher and Non-GMO Project Verified human food. For decades, Pines has contributed food, funds and energy to environmental sustainability, organic farming and feeding programs.

No Irrigation Used to Grow Pines Wheat Grass

no irrigation - left white

We grow our wheatgrass in appropriate climates that do not require irrigation. Pines is the only producer of certified organic whole food wheat grass in Kansas that doesn't irrigate. That's because we grow only in regions that provide ample, natural rainfall. Thus, we do not need irrigation. Others grow in dry parts of Kansas that require irrigation.

Pines seeks to promote sustainable practices. We oppose irrigation from limited fresh water resources. Starting more than 70 years ago, farmers built and used dehydrators in Kansas in areas that require irrigation.  Agribusiness has wasted our fresh water resource to produce pesticide-based, animal-grade alfalfa for industrialized meat industry.

Contaminated and Depleted Fossil Water from the Aquifer

For more than 70 years, agribusiness grew most alfalfa feed using very wasteful practices. They irrigated with limited ground water resources. This pesticide-based alfalfa industry was not the only ones responsible for wasting and contaminating this precious resource. Other agribusinesses in that region also use irrigation water to grow GMO corn for the ethanol industry. Ethanol is a gasoline substitute that costs at least three times more to produce than the selling price. It sells at a fraction of its costs only because of taxpayer subsidies. Worse that the waste of tax dollars, we are using up and contaminating our fresh ground water resources.  All that to make a poor quality gasoline!

These kinds of agribusiness abuses have severely depleted and contaminated the aquifer. This once-plentiful, once-clean fresh water resource is the Ogallala Aquifer. Many wells are now dry. Worse, many of the remaining wells test positive for Atrazine and other toxic farm chemicals. The depletion and contamination continues.

Pines opposes these abuses. Pines does not use our facilities for the meat industry. We do not use irrigation. We do not package in petrochemical plastic bottles or packets.  All this is why Pines is unique as a truly 100% organic, environmentally-conscious company.  We are a sustainable, vegan-friendly producer of whole food wheatgrass powders and tablets.
