Most People Don’t Eat Enough Dark Green Veggies

Christine's fabulous green smoothie is a great way to add more greens and other antioxidant foods to your diet.  Regardless of how many greens you eat, you can always eat more!  That's because research by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) found that only one person in ten eats enough veggies for the protective health benefits they provide.  As a result, those who eat three or more servings of dark green veggies each day have less diet-related disease.  That's why the USDA developed this MY PLATE graphic that shows veggies as the number one food.

Since 1939, the AMA has defined Pines’ wheatgrass and alfalfa as nutrient-dense dark green leafy veggies. A teaspoon of any of Pines’ powders or a few capsules or tablets are equal to a serving.  You can add the powders to a fabulous green smoothie recipe like this one from Christine or simply use the tablets and capsules for a easy and low cost way to eat more greens.  We grow Pines’ green super foods as nature intended. We harvest them at precise once-a-year time in the early spring when research shows the highest food value.

Pines Wheat Grass: The First Green Superfood in 1976

lab collage - right

Pines brought wheatgrass to the modern natural food market in 1976, but wheatgrass for humans packaged in an identical oxygen-free glass bottle was first grown on our farm in 1932 by Dr. Charles SchnabelWe are still in his original location and still operate his laboratory and follow his standards for growing, harvesting, and packaging. Schnabel devoted his life to the scientific study of wheatgrass. As a result, several authors called Schnabel “the father of wheatgrass.”

In addition to following Dr. Schnabel’s growing and harvest standards, Pines follows his packaging standards. We remove the oxygen from each container using amber glass bottles with special metal caps.  An oxygen-free atmosphere protects green food nutrients.  Without oxygen, green food loses value through oxidation.  After opening, you can seal the container between uses because of the tight-fitting metal cap. That results in the freshest green superfood possible. Brands packed in plastic tubs do not have that protection. They rather quickly lose food value from while sitting in a warehouse and on a store’s shelf.

The plaque shown at the bottom picture of the picture above is outside the door to Schanbel’s lab. Above it, one of our lab workers prepares tests on a batch of Pines Wheat Grass.  Various members of Dr. Schnabel's family have visited our farm and facilities and included them in a tour for a recent Schnabel family reunion.
