Glass or Plastic? The Problem with Plastic Packaging
This picture demonstrates the loss of color that occurs when brands package green super foods in plastic. Only oxygen-free amber glass bottles with special metal caps like we use protect nutrients. Our packaging is also "earth friendly."
Why Glass? Why do we go to the effort and expense of removing the oxygen from each bottle? The main reason is to prevent oxidation and loss of nutrients. We want to provide the best quality for our customers. Curiously, even though plastic cost much less, Pines products in glass cost less per serving than the plastic products that seek to imitate us! That's because our products are vibrant and green and not devitalized because of plastic packaging. For more than 80 years, the kind of packaging used by Pines has been considered the only appropriate way to package green powder. It is the only way to permanently remove oxygen. Creating an oxygen-free environment in each bottle prevents loss of color and nutrition through oxidation. In fact, until other brands began copying Pines' success with cheap methods, all green super foods were always packaged in amber glass with oxygen removed.
Besides Keeping Products Fresh, Glass Does not Pollute
Even though the natural foods market uses mostly plastic containers, few seem concerned. Each year the Texas-sized garbage patch grows. That pollution contains fragments of plastic tubs and other plastic containers swirling around in the center of the Pacific. They also seem oblivious to all the plastic waste in our landfills. Sharp shards of plastic from plastic containers are killing fish, mammals, birds and other wildlife in alarming numbers. This waste is also slowly leaching toxic chemicals into our environment. Even if you recycle and companies convert it to such things as lawn furniture, it continues to pollute.
The Hypocrisy of Banning Plastic Bags But Not Containers
Although some in the natural food market brag about not using plastic bags, bags represented less than 1% of the plastic leaving health food stores. Look at the shelves. Most of it is plastic that is much worse than bags. In fact, one green super food tub contains more plastic than 20 plastic grocery bags! When confronted with this issue, some say "recycle". That's a good idea, but even though many of us do recycle, most don't. Thus, most of the containers leaving natural food stores end up as plastic waste in our oceans and landfills. Ironically, recycling actually encourages more plastic waste by supporting companies that package that way. As a result of our failure to demand appropriate packaging, these companies never have incentive to stop polluting the planet and continue to add produce more plastic to our planet.
For More Than 40 Years, PINES is the Original Green Super Food
PINES is the pioneer of green super foods! We introduced wheatgrass to the natural food marketplace in 1976. It was Pines that coined the term "green super food" in the late 1970s. We are the ones who came up with slogans like "Eat More Greens". We were shouting that message from the rooftops. That was at a time when few people understood the importance of green foods for health and disease prevention. Unfortunately, our efforts to encourage people to eat more green may have led to this proliferation of plastic tubs. They often fill the tubs with devitalized brownish-green powders. Our efforts may have led to people to grow an unnatural and potentially-dangerous form of wheatgrass. People promote the juice from these unnatural methods as "wheatgrass shots." They force these poor plants to grow far-too-quickly with freakishly tangled roots in crowded trays. Because of the unnatural conditions, the mold levels are always off the chart even when mold is not visible.

The Centers for Disease Control found that only one in ten people eat enough dark green veggies. They also found dark green veggies protect us from disease common to modern society. That's why the USDA food plate (at left) made veggies the most important food group. No matter how many vegetables you eat, you probably need more. PINES products cost less than other vegetables, provide more nutrition. In addition, we won the Taste of Life Award! Please use our store locator to find a location near you where you can buy Pines.
